Applications are welcome from people who have an active interest in current affairs and public service issues, especially those who enjoy participating in discussions.
Advantages of Membership
The Romney Street Group runs a programme of lunchtime meetings with distinguished speakers. Around twenty talks are held each year, grouped into Spring, Summer and Autumn terms.
Members of the Romney Street Group can attend all the meetings and are encouraged to bring a guest.
Details of the meetings for each term are listed on the website and sent to members in advance of the each term. A week before each meeting with a short biograhy of the next speaker is sent by email with a link to make a booking which facilitates the sandwich order.
Talks are usually held at the Athenaeum, with occassional meetings at the Army & Navy Club, aka The RAG, also on Pall Mall.
Members are encouraged to participate at meetings with questions and comment. Guests may also participate. The Chatham House rule is strictly applied: speakers and fellow attendees may not be quoted outside the Group without their permission.
Members have the opportunity to listen to talks they have missed, or wish to hear again, through the members only section of the website. There is now an extensive archive of talks of all the recordings since we started them during 2020.
How to become a member
Applications for membership are welcome. Intending members will be requested to submit an application form. An application should normally be supported by an existing member of the Group who knows the applicant. In most cases the member will bring the applicant to one or two meetings as a guest.
Subscription and Fees
The current subscription for membership is £150 paid annually by standing order in October. There is also a meeting fee, currently £30, as a contribution to the cost of room hire and the lunch. The meeting charge does not cover the full cost of the meetings, which are subsidised by the membership subscriptions.
Athenaeum Members
All members of the Athenaeum may attend meetings occasionally on payment of the current £30 meeting charge and notifying the Programme Secretary by 9pm on the preceeding Sunday.
Athenaeum members who attend more than the occasional meeting are requested to apply to become members, using the same application form but without the need for a reference in support from a cuurent RSG member.
